Amazon.com Product Description
Apple Time Capsule 1TB is an automatic wireless backup device and a simultaneous dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi base station all in one device. With Time Capsule, the nagging need to back up your data has been replaced by automatic, constant protection. And even better, it all happens wirelessly, saving everything important, including your sanity.

Apple Time Capsule 1TB
At a Glance:
  • Automatic wireless backups
  • Built-in 1 TB hard drive
  • Simultaneous dual-band support for 802.11b/g and 802.11n
  • USB 2.0 port for sharing a hard drive or printer
  • Three Gigabit Ethernet ports

Inside Time Capsule's sleek design is a 1 TB hard drive.
Works with Time Machine for Easy Backups
Time Capsule includes a wireless 1TB hard drive designed to work with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. Just set Time Capsule as the designated backup drive for Time Machine, and that's it. Depending on how much data you have, your initial backup with Time Capsule could take overnight or longer. After it completes, only changed files are backed up - automatically, wirelessly, and in the background. So you never have to worry about backing up again. Even better, new technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard faster than before.

Backup Multiple Computers
Have multiple Mac computers in your house? Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Leopard- and Snow Leopard-based Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. Time Capsule spares you the work.

1TB Provides Plenty of Space
Time Capsule is your one place for backing up everything. Its massive 1TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need. So whether you have 250 songs or 250,000 songs to back up, room is the last thing you’ll run out of.

Ultimate Wireless Base Station
More than just a wireless hard drive, Time Capsule is also a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n technology. Experience a high-speed wireless network and a breakthrough way to back up all the Mac computers on your network. All in one device.

Simultaneous Dual-Band Support
Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch, and devices using 802.11b/g. Other devices can use either 2.4GHz or the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, Time Capsule operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multiband devices automatically use the best available band. This means all your Wi-Fi devices get the fastest possible wireless performance and the best possible range. In addition, Time Capsule reduces the possibility of interference from appliances and cordless phones that use the 2.4GHz band.

Time Capsule can backup multiple Macs automatically.
Share the Internet Securely with Guest Networking
It’s easy to allow guests to use your Internet connection without sharing your password or giving them access to the rest of your network. Simply enable the guest networking feature using the AirPort Utility application and create a separate Wi-Fi network just for your friends. You can set up this guest network with a different password or with none at all. Your primary network - including your printer, attached drives, or other devices - remains secure.

Share a Printer or Additional Hard Drive with USB Port
The included USB port is great for sharing a printer throughout your wireless network. Time Capsule and the Bonjour networking technology let everyone in the house or office - Mac and PC users alike - take advantage of one centrally located printer. And if you want to share both a printer and an additional hard drive, you can. Just connect a USB hub to Time Capsule. Whatever the combination, Time Capsule divides and conquers.

Time Capsule is compatible with Macs and PCs.
Works with Mac and PC.
Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard or Snow Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Mac OS X Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because Time Capsule mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily.

Apple Time Capsule measures 7.7 x 7.7 x 1.4 inches. It is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
Time Capsule, CD with AirPort Utility (Mac and Windows), AirPort Disk Utility for Windows, and Bonjour for Windows, Power cord, Printed and electronic documentation

Simultaneous dual-band operation allows for optimal performance of your wireless devices.

Product Description

5 out of 5 stars So far so good   February 27, 2010

Going on three months of use. I do wonder about some of the posts about this thing dying after 18 months as this particular model (dual band) has not been in existence that long...

As a router, this thing is tops. Used it to replace a Linksys N router. I get much better range and much faster data now on my macbook. Before, in my bedroom, less than 50 ft away from my router, I couldn't watch standard def Hulu videos at all. Now I can stream high def videos without any delays or pauses. Part of it is because I also have G devices (Wii, iphones, etc) and the old linksys was forced to operate on that slower frequency. This thing effectively gives you a separate G router and N router- so my macbook finally can operate at full N speed but still provide service to older devices. This thing smokes the linksys in range and speed.

As a time capsule it works. I backup my iMac and my Macbook to it. I had a Seagate drive before that died after 9 months. So now I have a time capsule and another external hard drive, I rotate between the two to have redundant data for WHEN one of them fails. All Hard drives fail at some point. I do wonder about heat, there's no fan, but it never gets very hot to the touch.

Very happy with it so far.

What can I say, it works.

I recommend Time Capsule for sharing data or for backups, not both. If you need both, get 2 Time Capsules, one for each use. For sharing data, Time Capsule is great. Every computer on the network can access the device easily.

The Time Capsule provides the easiest back ups possible. It is very easy to set-up and use. I suggest one user per Time Capsule. This keeps set-up simple, and provides the maximum storage space possible. If you have a laptop, this is the backup solution for you. If you have a desktop computer, I'd suggest a dedicated Firewire 800 hard drive for backups. Why? Because wireless is SLOW when compared with wired. USB is SLOW compared to Firewire 800, but USB is faster than wireless. So why do I recommend Time Capsule for laptops? To get rid of the wires, that's why you have a laptop. With any backup system your first backup will take a LONG time, but subsequent backups will be much quicker. Just be patient.

With backups, easy is a must. If it's not easy, it's not going to happen. Mac users? Use Time Machine. It works.

Some people complain that Time Capsules sometimes break. Yep, happens. Grow up, it's mechanical, it'll break. Get AppleCare for it. When it breaks, Apple will fix it. But my backups are on it! So? I assume you didn't kill your computer too. Just make a new backup and move on.

If your computer data is important to you, get a Time Capsule, or many. It's the best backup solution out there. I know, I've tried many. I want easy, dependable. This is it.

5 out of 5 stars Must for Entourage Users   April 19, 2010

Anyone using Entourage needs to know how to configure their Microsoft User Data files so Time Machine will only backup the incremental changes. Otherwise, Time Machine will try to back up the entire database file every time it is modified, even though only a few megabytes (e.g., receiving a single new email) out of several gigabytes of the file have been changed. Very, very annoying plus this will quickly fill up your backup storage and can cause each backup to take a relatively long time. You can avoid this problem by creating a sparse bundle disk image for your user data. The most helpful and easy to follow instructions for doing this are contained in an online article in Mac OS Hints, October 29, 2009. Amazon does not allow direct links to the article but a search should turn it up fairly easily.

5 out of 5 stars No Problems   April 10, 2010

My wife and I just made a complete switch to Mac. We each have our own iMacs now and decided to purchase the time capsule at the same time we bought the computers. Since we also purchased Apple Care at the same time, the time capsule will be covered for 3 years in case problems do crop up. For now, however, it has been great. It took me less than an hour to get it set-up and all our devices connected. This includes 2 iMacs, an iPhone, an iPod touch, 2 Windows XP computers, a Windows 7 computer, a Windows Vista computer, PS3, and xBox 360. All connected with no issues. I also got my work laptop connected with no issues. I have a printer hooked up to it so now we can print wirelessly. All in all it was pretty simple.

5 out of 5 stars Apple Quality all the way!   January 24, 2010

Pro: Finally the 4th generation of TC has reached perfection. It took me 10 min to install and configure. It's a Gigabit router with 1TB hard that you can use as NAS server. Comes with Time Machine a great piece of software that can backup wireless your Mac.

Cons: It doesn't support torrent client and UPnP and DLNA - that means that you cannot use this with SonyPlastation3.
