Product Description
Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support - Share your multifunction printer without running wires!

  • Share a multifunction printer with everyone on your network -- works with most USB printers
  • Allows full access to printing, faxing, scanning, and copying functions
  • Connects your printer directly to the network by 10/100 wired Ethernet or 54Mbps Wireless-G
  • Prevents congestion on your PC with other users' print jobs

The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support lets you connect a multifunction USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work.

The PrintServer is compatible with most USB multifunction printers, and allows full access to printing, faxing, scanning, and copying functions. Like any print server, users on the network can print anytime. The other functions are treated a little differently -- any user can request access to one of the other functions, and get exclusive use of that function until his task is complete.

Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly at up to 54Mbps via Wireless-G. The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs.

Your wireless data is protected by up to 128-bit WPA-PSK encryption. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the big print buffer handles even large graphics

5 out of 5 stars Great Wireless Print Server, but some problems with setup   October 16, 2008
    Computer teacher (Fresno, CA)
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

I installed this unit on 3 laptop computers, one with XP and two with Vista Home Basic. It took me two days to do it because I didn't completely understand the installation instructions. Once I got the technuque down, it took less than 45 minutes total and about 20 minutes for each additional computer. The instruction manual is actually on the provided CD so the only written documentation is the "Quick Installation" guide. These are things to remember before and during installation. 1. The desired printer must be setup and able to run from the computer via the USB cable before installation is starated. Test the printer first before you start. 2. You can use the provided CD to install or you can download from Linksys the "setup wizard" and run it from your hard drive. If you download from Linksys, it is a ZIP file that must be expanded and the start up is "Wizard.exe" Running it from your hard drive is faster. (There are probably two different set up programs in one, for XP it is ver 1 and for Vista it is ver 1.1) 3. There are two separate procedures that must be performed. The first sets up the print server. I used the "Manual" step up as I think it was easier to enter the SSID of the router as well as the pass phrase and other information. There was a problem with determining the actual encription method of the router, WEP, WPA, WPA2, (TKIP and AES) so before you start this setup make sure you know what exact encription method the router is set for, it must be exactly correct for the print server to work. 4. When the "quick installation" guide says to connect the power supply to the printer and/or the print server, it means to not only connect the power supply, but to power them up. Also, when you power up the printer and/or the print server, let them complete boot up before you click on "NEXT". 5. The second step to the process is to set up the computer. While the print server must be only set up once, each computer must be set up separately. 6. When the written instructions and on screen wording says to close down all other running programs, LEAVE YOUR INTERNET SECURITY PROGRAM RUNNING. I turned Zone Alarm off and it then blocked all of the access when I tried to print after installation. On a Vista machine with Norton IS, this was not a problem as long as you leave the program running. 7. Play close attention to the screen as you will have to accept the "unapproved" program to install several times as well as allow the installation with VISTA. Now that the print server is installed, it works like a champ with a HP Color LaserJet 1600. My firmware version on the print server is 1017 from the factory which is the latest. If you do not have this version, other reviews have suggested that you update to the latest firmware version if you are running Vista. I hope this not only encourages you to purchase the Linksys WPSM54G wireless print server, but help you install it.

5 out of 5 stars Great after you get past WEP bug (easy fix)   June 26, 2007

Some of the gripes have to do with installation. I have found that there is a BUG in the installation process if you use the setup wizard (which you HAVE to use, by the way - to install print drivers on your PC).

To install, you do have to hook up temporarily to a wired network to communicate with the print server and tell it what your security scheme is. Someone complained about that, but with WIFI security, there really is no way around this. It detected my network with ease.

Halfway through this detection process, you are prompted for the WEP or WPA keys if you use them, and then promted to remove the hardwire cable and 'reboot' the print server. Supposedly when it comes back up, it is on your network......

That's where I ran into trouble. The WEP key was NOT transferred to the print server. I had to manually log into the server (http://192.168.1.xxx or whatever your subnet is). To find the server's ip address, log onto your network router and look at the DHCP clients table. There it is. If you assigned an IP address to it already, use the one you assigned.

NOW, USING THE Print Server's config pages, go manually type in the WEP key and it will be saved. For some reason the install wizard doesn't transfer it - it got garbled in the process - at least on my setup.

After that, all is well! I'm thrilled at printing "bi-directional" via USB for my Fax/Scan/Print multifunction printer. Now on to try scanning across the network. Not something I do frequently, but will be interesting to see if that works....

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Breeze to Setup   August 23, 2007

I bought this product because I work from home on a laptop, and I wanted to be able to print wirelessly from any room in my house. I read several reviews here because I thought that it might be a daunting task to set up this print server on my home network. I set up two laptops and a desktop computer in about one hour total time (Excluding the time it took to install the printer drivers on each of the computers).

The documentation from Linksys was absolutely perfect. It is comprised of two steps for the initial installation of the print server on your first machine. In step one you basically configure the print server on your wireless network. In step two you configure your actual computer. After you complete these two steps on your wireless computer, you are almost home free. You simply have to complete step two only on your other machines that you want to add to your wireless network. Simply put, the documentation from Linksys is picture perfect, and makes the job literally a breeze.

I have this device connected to a HP 2015 laser printer because I print a lot of material for work. The printer and print server work flawlessly together and I have zero complaints. Wireless is the painless way to go.

Bought one to use with a Dell Color Laser. Up and running and fully functional in 45 minutes. Tried a D-link and wasted 2 days trying to get it operational. Tried Linksys-SUCCESS!

Read a lot of mixed reviews and was very apprehensive about buying any of the popular name brand print servers. Since I already had Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, I decided to stay with the same name brand dispite the negative reviews.

Followed the quick start guide to the letter as suggested by previous successful reviewers and completed the setup in 20 minutes without a hitch.

Printing from both wireless DELL laptop and DELL desktop running XP on both. COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SIMPLER. Would recommend this product to even the most basic computer savvy user setting up a wireless home network.
